[UPDATED with Dr's Statement at the Bottom of the page]

PETALING JAYA: A dental clinic in Shah Alam has defended a “Muslims only” job advertisement it had put up which has drawn criticism online, explaining that this decision was purely based on Islamic beliefs.

Dr Nik Ahmad Syakir, executive director of Dental Republik, said they only wanted to hire Muslims as Islam outlined the conduct that needed to be practised by everyone at work.

He said this then ensures that all forms of occupations produced a halal source of living, adding that it was more important to earn the pleasure of God.

“It’s God’s pleasure that causes the sustenance that we earn to not only be halal, but also to be overflowing with blessing. This is our belief as Muslims. The same goes for other religions who believe in ‘feng shui’ and so on.

“So if anyone felt uncomfortable because of this decision, we at Dental Republik dental clinic would like to apologise. However, we are firm in our beliefs when it comes to choosing employees,” he said in a Facebook post today.

The dental clinic’s employment advert that went viral stated that only Muslims would be hired and that they needed to observe their daily prayers.

Netizens had questioned whether religion should be a factor when it comes to the hiring of employees, as opposed to qualification and experience.
